Set againstthe backdrop of the snow-capped Pir panjal range, Jammu marks the tranisitons between the Himalayas in the north and the dusty plains of the Punjab in the south, bridgibg these two states by a series of scrub covered hills, forested mountaineds and deep river valleys. The southernmost unit of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Jammu region is traversed by the Shivalik Hills, and quenched by the rivers Ravi, Tawi and Chenab. It is Jammu & Kashmir’s second-largest city and its winter capital. In summer It is a sweltering contrast to the cool heights of Kashmir. From October, it becomes much more pleasant. Jammu actually consist of two towns. The old town sits on a hilltop overlooking the river is the new town of Jammu Tawi. Jammu is the railhead and main entry point for Kashmir.

The main attraction is a naturally found Shiva lingam of indeterminate age. Legend has it that the cave located leads you out of the country.

Ranbireshwar Temple:

Built by Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1883 AD. Ranbireshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are twelve Shiva ‘Lingams’ of crystal measuring from 15 cms. And galleries with thousands of shiva ‘lingams’ fixed on stone slabs.

Amongst the temples in the city, the Raghunath mandir takes pride of the place, being situated right in the heart of Jammu. It consists of a cluster of temples, which makes it the largest temple complexs, in Northen India. Situated in the heart of the city and surrounded by a group of other temples, this temple is dedicated to lord Rama. It is outstanding and unique in Northen India. Work on the temple was started by Maharaja Gulan Singh, founder of the present city, in 1835 AD and was completed 1860 AD. The inner walls of the main temple are covered with gold sheet on three sides. There are many galleries with lakhs of ‘saligrams’.

The canal branches off from the river Chenab at Akhnoor. Its waters are ice cold throughout the year. It is also a good view point.

Short of the Sudh Mahadev is the legendary spring where the Goddess Parvati used to bath before commencing her daily prayers at Sudh Mahadev. This spring came to be named after her as ‘Gauri Kund’.

Situated a few kilometers firther away from Sudh Mahadev, Mantalai is surrounded by lush deodar forests, at an altitude of over 2000meters. It is belived that Lord Shiva had got married to the Goddess Parvati here.

A holy spot near Patnitop, pilgrims visit this place on the full moon night of Sawan (July-August) and worship a Trishul (Trident) and a mace supposedly belonging to Bhima ( one of the five legendry Pandava brothers). Here devak stream originates and disappears into its bed after flowing down a few kilometers. Accommodation at pilgrim shelters.

It is located 19 kms. From Patnitop, slightly away from the National highway. It looks as though it has beem scooped out of the earth in the shape of a cup, fringed by gigantic conifers. A place for a quiet holiday.

Because, On the way of Sudh Mahadev, Mantalai, a short detour takes one to Krimchi, site of three of the oldest temples of Jammu. The architecture of the temples show distinct Greek influences.

Baba Dhansar is a beautiful and cool picnic spot. A huge spring gushes out of the mountainside and forms a number of small waterfalls before flowing into the Holy Banganga.So, A Shivling, naturally formed next to a spring in a small grove in the rock face, experiences droplets of water falling on it all year round. During Shivratri, we hold a big mela here.
