PM Modi inaugurates new Nalanda University campus in Bihar
According to Narendra Modi, Nalanda University should lead the way as India regains its position as the world’s preeminent information hub.
On June 19, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to the ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara in the Bihar region of Nalanda.
On June 19, the Prime Minister dedicated the international campus of Nalanda University, which is located near the ancient Nalanda ruins in Rajgir, Bihar.
“Books may burn in the flames of fire, but the flames of fire cannot destroy knowledge,” Mr. Modi declared, asserting that Nalanda is a symbol of India’s intellectual tradition and dynamic cultural interaction. Nalanda is a source of pride, respect, and identity.
On the day of the inauguration, he expressed his satisfaction at seeing delegations from so many different nations. He made the argument that Bihar’s new university campus further evidences the state’s progress.

At the Wednesday inauguration of the new Nalanda University campus in Bihar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar, EAM S. Jaishankar, and others were present.
Seventeen ambassadors from participating countries, along with Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar, attended the event. Attending the occasion were Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Deputy Chief Ministers Vijay Sinha and Samrat Choudhary.
The prime minister, Narendra Modi, was informed of the historic university on June 19, 2024, while touring the remains of Nalanda Mahavihara in the Nalanda area.
Prior to officially opening the new campus, the PM also paid a visit to the historic Nalanda ruins and planted a Bodhi tree sapling that was transported from Bodh Gaya to the school. Arvind Panagariya, the Chancellor of Nalanda University, and Abhay Kumar Singh, the Interim Vice-Chancellor, were also in attendance.
According to PM Modi, Nalanda will once more grow into a significant hub for our cross-cultural interchange.
In his address, Mr. Modi said, “The renaissance of Nalanda University near its ancient ruins will introduce India’s potential to the world. The heritage of many countries and Asia is linked to Nalanda, which is more than a renewal of India’s past. In days to come, Nalanda University will once again become a major centre for our cultural exchange.”
Under the leadership of Mr. Modi in 2014, the decision to establish the University as an international center of learning and scholarship was made, reinforcing the world’s awareness of the 21st century’s eminence of ancient Nalanda University. Old History of Nalanda University
Students from all over the world were attracted to the ancient Nalanda University, established in the 5th century. The university flourished for 800 years before it was burnt down by invaders in the 12th century.
India has been a model of sustainability for centuries, and in the coming days, Mr. Modi intends to make India a center of education and knowledge for the world.
India should once again become the world’s most prominent knowledge center.
“Be curious, be courageous but above all be kind. I am confident that our youth will provide leadership to the entire world in the times to come. I am confident that Nalanda will become an important centre for global causes,” he told students.
He also stressed that the Central government is always ready to give all possible help.
This international university, apart from India, has participation from 17 other nations —
Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Mauritius, Myanmar,
New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. These countries have signed MoUs in support of the University.
